Blood donation – what is important to know?

Types of donations and their basic volumes

Conversion factors of blood component donations to whole blood

Recovery periods between blood donations

What is the required volume of whole blood enabling one to receive the title of Honorary Blood Donor.

Conversations with blood donors

Interviews were conducted with 10 regular blood donors.

Key Insights:

  1. Preferences: Whole blood or components (e.g., platelets, plasma).
  2. Location: Fixed donation sites or mobile blood drives, depending on availability.
  3. Disqualifications: Most found a feature to log disqualifications useful.
  4. Apps: Reminders and converting components to whole blood were appreciated.
  5. Loyalty Programs: Most participate in the “Every Drop Counts” program.

Analysis conclusions

  1. Lack of full functionality

No app offers a complete set of features for donors.

  2. Potential for feature integration

Combining features can create a comprehensive tool.

  3. Motivation for donation

Loyalty programs and gamification can boost engagement.

  4. Essential features of the new application

The app should include visual donation stats, next donation dates, blood type info, donation history, notifications, and the ability to add disqualifications from donating blood.

Usability tests

Choice of prototype advancement level and testing method

The tests were conducted online using an interactive prototype based on medium-fidelity wireframes. This choice was justified by several significant benefits:

  • Greater realism
  • Increased precision
  • Fuller presentation of content
  • Easier identification of issues
  • Easier analysis of results
  • Early concept evaluation
  • Quick iterations
  • Focus on functionality

Test Scenario – task descriptions

  1. Introduction task

Please describe what you see on the screen. Familiarize yourself with how the app works.

  2. Task 1: Add a donation

Add a new plasma donation to the calendar. Change the volume from 600 ml to 650 ml. Select the collection point "OT I Warsaw." Set the donation date to September 28, 2023. Mark excellent well-being after donation. Use the loyalty program "Every Drop Counts." Check one statutory stamp and one bonus stamp.

  3. Task 2: Add a disqualification

Add a new blood donation disqualification to the calendar, effective from September 28, 2023, lasting 180 days.

  4. Task 3: Remove the disqualification

    Remove the newly created disqualification.

  5. Task 4: Schedule a donation

Schedule a whole blood donation at the Warsaw I Field Office for October 17, 2023, at 9:00 a.m.

  6. Task 5: Check HDK badges

Check how many liters of whole blood you need to receive the III level of Distinguished Honor Donor badge.

  7. Task 6: Check notifications

Check the latest notifications in the application to stay updated with important information.

Tester selection

  • Participants: 8 individuals (2 females, 6 males, aged 25–44), regular blood donors.
  • Recruitment: Found via the "Honorary Blood Donor" Facebook group.
  • Why Them: Represent the target audience, understand donation processes, and can evaluate if the app meets their needs.

Test results and improvements

Introduction task

Participants explored the app and described the screen. No specific tasks were performed.

Issue

Two users did not notice the ability to scroll the section providing information on the amount of whole blood and its components. The overflow area is cropped in a less visible way.

Improvement

The problem was resolved incidentally while implementing other improvements.

Task 1: Add a donation

Testers completed smoothly.

Task 2. Add a disqualification

Testers completed easily.

Task 3: Remove the disqualification

Testers completed smoothly.

Task 4. Schedule a donation

Critical issue

Users had difficulty locating the donation scheduling option due to its unintuitive placement.

Improvements

It is necessary to place the donation scheduling function where users were looking for it – i.e., in the entry type selection tab – alongside the options to add a new donation and add a new disqualification. Changes included:

Removing the option to schedule a donation from the section informing about the amount of whole blood and its components.

Przed i po: usunięcie opcji 'Zaplanuj' z kafelka informacyjnego Krew pełna 900 ml

Adding the option to schedule a donation to the entry type selection tab.

Przed i po: dodanie opcji planowania donacji do zakładki wyboru typu wpisu

Task 5. Check HDK badges

Users completed smoothly.

Task 6. Check notifications

Testers easily completed the sixth task, which involved checking notifications.
